Department of Family Services Foster and Adoptive Pre-Service Training

arrows For Relatives Only– The training requirement for relatives (and fictive kin) is only 12 hours. Required classes include: Orientation, Kinship, Discipline and Teamwork.
arrows For Married/Partnered Couples – Both applicants need to attend all required training.
arrows Non-Primary Caregivers(grandparents, adult children, room mates, etc.) in the home may attend classes, but are not required to attend.

arrows Pre-Service Training is required for all applicants interested in becoming a Foster or Adoptive parent. Pre-Service training is not traditional “parenting class”. The classes are designed to give you a better understanding of the children involved in the foster care system, children that may have emotional, behavioral or medical concerns, and a better understanding of the child welfare system as a whole. Topics discussed in training include dealing with grief and loss, attachment issues, working on a team with child welfare professionals, and working with birth parents.

arrows Pre-Service Training consists of an Orientation and Eight (8) Pre-Service Training classes and are three-hours each.

arrows Orientations are offered many times throughout the month – at different times and locations throughout the valley.

arrows Classes can be taken consecutively for eight weeks, or can be “combined”. Combined training means that applicants can elect to take two classes together for a total of six hours. Combined training means that applicants can complete their required training in four (4) class sessions, as opposed to the traditional eight (8) class sessions.
