BulletSTEP ONE:

Request the Foster/Adoptive Informational Packet by calling
(702) 455-0181, or by attending one of the recruitment events and the DFS Orientation (registration is not required)- orientations are offered many times each month – at various comunity locations.
Please Click here for an Recruitment Events/Orientation Schedule Calendar.

BulletSTEP TWO:

Each applicant is responsible for completing 30 hours of training provided by the Department of Family Services. This can be done in ten three-hour sessions or five six-hour sessions. Applicants are required to take all classes. Training is offered evenings, weekends, and during the day throughout the year. Applicants may call 455-5295 to register for the next available class. If you are a relative to the child you are seeking licensure for, you are only required to take 3 classes, for a total of 9 training hours.

BulletSTEP THREE:

Each applicant will be provided with an application during the training process or at the Recruitment & Licensing Clinic.  As part of the application process, applicants are invited to schedule an appointment for fingerprinting. Applicants can be working on their application, making the fingerprint appointment and completing their pre-service training at the same time. Applicants will also need to obtain a TB test during this time period.

BulletSTEP FOUR:

Once the application has been completed, it may be immediately turned into the DFS Licensing Department. Completed applications are turned into the following address: Department of Family Services, Attention: Trisha Welch, 333 N. Rancho, Suite 130, Las Vegas Nevada, 89106. A file will be created and screened for any missing items, waivers, etc. Once screened, the file will be forwarded onto a licensing worker.

BulletSTEP FIVE:

The licensing worker will review the file again and check for completeness. They will also make sure that all necessary background checks have been returned to the agency. The licensing worker will call the applicant and make an appointment for a home study. The home study generally takes two visits to complete and includes a health and safety inspection of the home and property.

BulletSTEP SIX:

Once the applicant has an approved home study, and there are no concerns with the health and safety inspection, the applicant is issued a license. The license is immediately sent to the applicant and to the DFS Placement Team. The DFS Placement Team will review the information on the license and notify the applicant of potential placements.
